L’antica storia d’amore di origine persiana musicata da Maurizio Balzola per voce recitante e orchestra, narra la vicenda di Bijan, grande eroe persiano e della principessa Manijeh, figlia del Re di Turan, nemico giurato dei persiani. Attraverso una serie di vicende a volte sentimentali, a volte drammatiche che portano addirittura ad una epica battaglia tra la cavalleria persiana e l’esercito di Turan, Bijan e Manjieh riescono a coronare il loro sogno d’amore. Il sovrano di Turan, sconfitto ritorna in patria e lo Scia di Persia dona favolosi gioielli alla principessa facendo preparare un suntuoso banchetto di nozze. La composizione musicale divisa in varie parti alterna l’armonia tonale all’utilizzo della scala araba. L’organico strumentale oltre ai tradizionali strumenti dell’orchestra sinfonica inserisce il Duduk (strumento a fiato di origine armena) e il Daf (strumento a percussione di origine persiana). A seconda dell’articolarsi della vicenda vi sono brani di intensa profondità romantica (come ad esempio il brano “Amore infinito”) che si alternano a brani descrittivi del paesaggio mediorientale (è il caso del brano The Turan gardens) e a brani di massiccia potenza come “The great battle”. Il brano finale che conclude la composizione, intitolato “Volo di colombe” esprime la realizzazione di un amore che vince sull’odio e rende felici i due protagonisti.

The ancient love story of Persian origin set to music by Maurizio Balzola for narrator and orchestra,
tells the story of Bijan, a great Persian hero, and Princess Manijeh, daughter of the King of Turan, a
sworn enemy of the Persians. Through a series of events, sometimes sentimental, sometimes
dramatic, that even lead to an epic battle between the Persian cavalry and the army of Turan, Bijan
and Manjieh manage to fulfill their dream of love. The defeated sovereign of Turan returns to his
homeland and the Shah of Persia gives the princess fabulous jewels and prepares a sumptuous
wedding banquet. The musical composition, divided into various parts, alternates tonal harmony
with the use of the Arabic scale. The instrumental ensemble, in addition to the traditional
instruments of the symphony orchestra, includes the Duduk (a wind instrument of Armenian origin)
and the Daf (a percussion instrument of Persian origin). Depending on the development of the story,
there are songs of intense romantic depth (such as the song “Amore infinito”) that alternate with
songs descriptive of the Middle Eastern landscape (such as the song The Turan gardens) and songs
of massive power such as “The great battle”. The final song that concludes the composition, entitled
“Volo di colombe” expresses the realization of a love that wins over hate and makes the two
protagonists happy.
